FOSTER, Thomas.
Professional.
Born at Mill Town, Glossop, Derbyshire, 15th December 1848.
Died at East Glossop, Derbyshire, 22nd March 1929.
The son of Robert Foster, cotton weaver, of Glossop. He started his cricket with the Glossop United Club, but joined the Glossop Club in 1867. He first went out as a professional in 1872 with the Clifford Club, in Manchester, but returned to the Glossop Club in 1874-76. From 1877 until 1881 he was engaged by the Rastrick Club in Yorkshire. In 1883 he was engaged at Market Bosworth. His first match for Derbyshire was in 1873 and between then and 1884 he played in 90 first-class matches, 85 of them for the County. From 1880 he was landlord of the Arundel Arms, Hadfield, Manchester, moving to the Pear Tree, High Street, East Glossop, in 1883.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was a 32 year old licensed victualler, at the Arundale Arms, Glossop Dale, Derbyshire (presumably an alternative version of the Hadfield address). His wife Hannah is 31 year old and born at Handsworth, Yorkshire. They have a son, Joe William aged 11, and two daughters, Mary Emma aged 6 and Martha Ann aged 2. Thomass father, Robert, a widower aged 73, is living with them, as are two boarders, Daniel Lamb aged 17 and Emma Lamb aged 15, both cotton weavers born in Grimsby.
