KING, George Lionel.
Amateur.
Born at 54 Brunswick Place, Brighton, Sussex, 6th April 1857.
Died at Kemp Town, Brighton, Sussex, 29th June 1944.
The son of George William King, the Old Etonian who played for Sussex 1842-64 and Cambridge University 1843, he was also Secretary of Sussex 1848-56 & 1870-80. He was nephew of H.P.Tamplin, who played for Sussex in 1827. George was educated at Rugby where he was a member of the cricket eleven in 1874-76. He went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he appeared in the Freshmans and Seniors matches, but not in a first-class match. He did however play six first-class matches for Sussex 1880-81.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at Newton Hall School, Wolborough, Devon, aged 23, unmarried, a teacher B.A.Cambridge. There are two other teachers, Alexander Pyne unmarried aged 30, born Canada, head teacher and Frederick W.Kingston (6 matches for Cambridge University 1878) unmarried aged 25. There are 26 boarder scholars and six domestic servants.
