OPENSHAW, William Edward.
Amateur.
Born at Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa, 5th February 1852.
Died at Haydock Lodge, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, 7th February 1915.
The son of William Openshaw of Victoria Park, Manchester, he was educated at Harrow, where he was a member of the cricket eleven1869-70 and the football eleven 1869. He left Harrow in 1870 and became a merchant in Manchester. He played cricket for Cheshire 1872-78 and in four first class matches for Lancashire 1879-82. A good rugby footballer he played for England against Ireland 1879.
In the 1881 Census he was living at Daisy Bank Road, Rusholme, Manchester, with his father, William, a widower aged 55 born in Bury and a manufacturer. He is unmarried, aged 29, born at Cape Town.
