Brief profile of Mervyn Hill
by Dr.A.K.Hignell

Player:ML Hill

Mervyn Hill was the son of Vernon Hill, the free hitting Somerset batsman.

Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, Hill had initially followed in his father`s footsteps by playing county cricket for Somerset in 1921. But Hill`s family hailed from the Cardiff area, and having been born in Llandaff, the young batsman wicket-keeper qualified for Glamorgan. He subsequently played in three matches in 1923 for the Welsh county during his summer vacation from Trinity College as the county gave trials to a number of `keepers.

After coming down, Hill went into dairy farming in the West Country and played occasionally for Somerset and Devon. He also played for the M.C.C. and went with them on their tour to India, Burma and Sri Lanka in 1926/27.
