Born at Caverswall, Staffordshire, 29th April 1847.
Died at Rose Hill, Derby, 27th September 1904.
He played his club cricket for the Derby Midland Cricket Club 1872-1896 and was tried by Derbyshire on three occasions 1881-82 without much success. An accident deprived him of the sight of one eye, bringing an end to his cricketing career.
The 1881 Census finds him living at 42 Copeland Street, Derby, the home of his father Samuel, aged 64, born at Littleover, Derbyshire, a platelayer, and his wife Phoebe, aged 64, born Derby. Also present are his unmarried brother Henry, aged 35, born in Normandy, France, a boilermaker, and his two unmarried sisters Betsy J. aged 25, a cotton winder, and Phoebe aged 23, a brass bobbin winder. William is a widower, aged 33, a boiler maker, with two daughters Phoebe J aged 8 and Alice M. aged 4.
