PINDER, George. (real name George Pinder HATTERSLEY)
Professional.
Born at Ecclesfield, Sheffield, Yorkshire, 15th July 1841.
Died at Hickleton, Doncaster, Yorkshire, 15th January 1903.
He was working as a pocket-knife grinder in Sheffield by the time he was ten years old, and joined the St Marys CC in Sheffield, starting to keep wicket for them at the age of 18. In 1863 he assisted a twenty-two of Sheffield Shrewsbury CC against the All England XI, but it was 1867 before he was tried in the Yorkshire team. He played in 179 first-class matches in all, 124 of them for Yorkshire, and toured North America in 1879. He received a benefit in 1880, which raised about £300. After that season he lost his place in the Yorkshire side and fell upon hard times. However in 1893 he became the groundsman and storekeeper at the Hickleton Main Colliery CC. It was ten years later that he died at his daughters home at Hickleton.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at the Kings Head, Carlton Road, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, aged 39, a publican, with his wife, Emma aged 44. There are three unmarried stepsons William Dunkerly aged 23, a carter, Albert Dunkerly aged 18, a dealer, and Vernon Dunkerly aged 16, a sadler, and also two daughters Ada aged 10 and Lilly aged 9, and a niece, Eliza Walker aged 17.
