PLATTS, John Thomas Brown Dumelow.
Professional.
Born at Chellaston, Derbyshire, 23rd November 1848.
Died at Derby, 6th August 1898.
He was a wheelwright by trade and an enthusiastic cricketer who first went out as a professional in 1868 at Ipswich School. In 1869 he was with the Dudley Club and in 1870 with the MCC at LordÂ’s. He was first tried for Derbyshire in 1871 and this was the first of 97 first-class matches, 90 of them for Derbyshire. He undertook engagements at Accrington in 1871, Batley in 1872, Taunton and Birmingham in 1873, and at Birmingham in 1874 and 1875. In 1876 he was at Swansea and in 1877 at Great Harwood. In 1885 he received the benefit of the match against Yorkshire at Derby. He was for some time a first-class umpire (1885-96).
At the time of the 1881 Census he was at the Rose and Crown, at Chellaston, Derbyshire, aged 32, a publican and a professional cricketer, with his two sons John T. aged 1 and Joseph aged 3 months. Also present are his sister and brother-in-law Sarah, aged 40 and George Pegg, aged 40 a coach maker, and their two children, Mary E. aged 7 and Samuel R. aged 4. Mary Pegg, a widow aged 66 is a visitor, as is another brother-in-law George Tipper, aged 26 and a railway labourer, and James Wishall, aged 54 a railway porter. There is one domestic servant.
