RHODES, Herbert Edward.
Amateur.
Born at Hennerton House, Wargrave, Berkshire, 11th January 1852.
Died at Dover, Kent, 10th September 1889.
The third son of J.W. Rhodes, of Hennerton, Henley-on-Thames, Berkshire, he was educated at Eton and went up to Jesus College, Cambridge. He did not play in any first-class cricket while at university but he was the stroke of the Cambridge boat in 1873, 1874 and 1875 and he rowed No.7 in 1876. His debut in first-class cricket was in 1878 and between then and 1883 he played in 25 first-class matches, ten of them for Yorkshire. Much of his later cricket was for Henley CC and the MCC. He was due to tour India with Vernons team in the winter of 1889/90, but just before he was due to leave he suffered a fatal accident when he fell off his horse.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at 17 Charles Street, Hanover Square, London, unmarried, aged 29, a B.A. from Jesus College, Cambridge. He had a visitor, Robert W. Gorrie, an unmarried 23 year old and a hop merchant. There was a housekeeper.
