The son of the Rev. Charles Frederic Seymour, The Rectory, Winchfield, Hampshire, he was educated at Harrow, and went up to Merton College, Oxford, where he took his B.A. in 1877. He played no first-class cricket while at Oxford but won a blue for royal tennis. He first-class cricket debut was for the MCC in 1879 and he played in 16 matches in all, 15 of them for Hampshire. He was the brother-in-law of B.W. Bentinck (Hampshire 1900-02). From 1880 he was a barrister, and became J.P. for Wiltshire and Hampshire.
At the time of the 1881 Census no trace of him could be found, but his father, Charles F., aged 55, born at Naples, Italy, rector of Winchfield, and his wife Isabella, aged 57, born at Ash Rectory, Hampshire, are staying with his sister-in-law Sophia A. Hawkins, a widow, aged 66, born at Ash Rectory, at Wimborne Hillcott, Holdenhurst, Hampshire. Also staying are three unmarried nieces of Mrs Hawkins, Mary Ann Seymour, aged 24, and Agnes Seymour, aged 18, both born at Winchfield and presumably sisters of Charles Read Seymour, also Agnes Lefroy, aged 33, born at Crewkham, Hampshire. There are four domestic servants.
