STUDD, Charles Thomas.
Amateur.
Born at Spratton, Northamptonshire, 2nd December 1860.
Died at Ibambi, Belgium Congo, Africa, 16th July 1931.
The third son of Edward Studd, of Tidworth House, Marlborough, Wiltshire and 2 Hyde Park Gardens, London, W., he was educated at Eton, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1877-79, being captain in 1879. He won the double and single rackets and school fives in 1879. He went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, was a member of the University cricket eleven 1880-83, being captain 1883, winning his blue in all four years. He also won a blue for rackets in 1881. He played cricket for Middlesex in 1879, the first of 99 first-class matches in which he played, including 34 for Middlesex and five Test Matches. He toured Australia 1882/3. His last first-class match was for the Gentlemen of India in 1902/3. His brothers A.H. played for the MCC, J.E.K., G.B. and H.W. for Middlesex and R.A. for Hampshire.
On the 4th of February 1885, in company with a party of public school men he set sail in the Kaiser-I-Hind to China, on a missionary expedition to preach the Gospel in that country, under the auspices of the China Inland Mission. He served in the province of Shansh, at Yai-Yuan Fu until 1895 when he was invalided home and from 1895-1900 worked with the Student Volunteer Movement in England and America. In 1900 he went to India to work with the Anglo-Indian Evangelisation Society. Later he went to the Belgium Congo where he founded the Heart of Africa Mission and served for the rest of his life, despite illness and hardship.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was lodging at 72 Bridge Street, Cambridge, the home of Thomas Stearn, aged 56, a photographer, and his wife, Eliza A., aged 52, a photographist. He is aged 20 and a student. His brother George B. is aged 21, an undergraduate.
