STUDD, George Brown.
Amateur.
Born at Netheravon House, near Amesbury, Wiltshire, 20th October 1859.
Died at Pasadena, California, U.S.A., 13th February 1945.
The second son of Edward Studd, of Tidworth House, Marlborough, Wiltshire and 2 Hyde Park Gardens, London, W., he was educated at Eton, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1877-78 and won school fives 1878. He went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the University cricket eleven 1879-82, winning his blue all four years and being captain 1882. He also played tennis against Oxford 1881 and 1882. He first played for Middlesex in 1879 and had 87 first-class matches in all, 29 of them for Middlesex and four of them being Test Matches. He toured Australia 1882/3. His brothers H.A. played for MCC, A.H., C.T., H.W. and J.E.K. played for Middlesex and R.A. for Hampshire. He took his B.A. and LL.B. and was called to the Bar in 1886, but was unable to practise due to an attack of typhoid fever which compelled him to winter abroad. He became engaged in missionary work, first in China, then India and from 1891 in America with the Rev. T.P. and Mrs. Ferguson at Los Angeles, on the Pacific Coast.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was lodging at 72 Bridge Street, Cambridge, with Thomas Stearn, aged 56, photographer, and his wife Eliza A. aged 52, a photographist. He is aged 21, an undergraduate, and his brother Charles T., aged 20 is a student.
