STUDD, John Edward Kynaston.

Born at Netheravon House, near Amesbury, Wiltshire, 26th July 1858.
Died at Marylebone, London, 14th January 1944.
The first son of Edward Studd, of Tidworth House, Marlborough, Wiltshire and 2 Hyde Park Gardens, London, W., he was educated at Eton, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1876-77. He went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the University cricket eleven 1881-84, winning his blue all four years and being captain 1884. He made his first appearance for Middlesex in 1878, and played in 54 first-class matches in all, 11 of them for Middlesex. His brothers H.A. played for the MCC, A.H., C.T., G.G., and H.W. played for Middlesex and R.A. for Hampshire. He gained his B.A. in 1884 and in 1885 became the Hon. Secretary of the Polytechnic Young Mens Christian Association, of which he was voted Vice-President in March 1901, and President in 1903 on the death of Quintin Hogg the founder. He served during the First World War as the Major commanding the 21st (St Marylebone) battalion of the County of London volunteer regiment and as commandant of the West London volunteer group. He was a lieutenant, High Sheriff 1922-23, and Lord Mayor of the City of London, 1928. He was awarded an O.B.E. in 1919 and knighted 11th October 1923. He was created the first baronet on 16th October 1929.
The 1881 Census finds him lodging at 21 Market Hill, Cambridge, the home of the widow Sarah H. Emmerson, aged 76, a retired baker, Her son Harry, aged 35, baker, and daughters Sarah aged 44, baker and Alice, aged 33, bakers assistant. J.E.K. Studd is aged 22, an undergraduate of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a domestic servant and a bakehouse servant.
