VERNON, George Frederick.
Amateur.
Born at Marylebone, London, 20th June 1856.
Died at Elmina, Gold Coast, Africa, 10th August 1902.
The son of George Vernon, of 32 Montague Square, London, W., he was educated at Rugby School, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1873-74. He appeared in 239 first-class matches, including 103 for Middlesex and one Test Match, and toured Australia 1882/3 and 1887/8, Ceylon and India 1889/90 and India 1892/3. His debut in first-class cricket was for the MCC in 1876 and his last first-class match was also for the MCC in 1898. A fine rugby player he played for Blackheath and England and he was a good rackets player. He was called to the Bar at Middle Temple and practised as a barrister. He died of malarial fever.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was staying at the Dalvina Shooting Cottage, Farr, Sutherland, Scotland, with John MacBeth, aged 47, gamekeeper, and his wife Mary, aged 34. George Vernon is unmarried, aged 24, a barrister. Also staying at the cottage are Sherwin Pearson, unmarried, aged 29, B.A. Oxford (T.S.Pearson – Rugby, Oxford and Middlesex) and Alexander Webbe, unmarried, aged 26, B.A. Oxford (A.J.Webbe – Harrow, Oxford and Middlesex).
