WOOD, Arthur Hardy.
Amateur.
Born at Thedden Grange, Alton, Hampshire, 25th May 1844.
Died at Hove, Sussex, 10th July 1933.
The third son of J. Wood, of Theddon Grange, Alton, Hampshire, he was educated at Eton, which he left in 1861. He first played for Hampshire in 1870 and played in 30 first-class matches in all, 28 of them for that county. He was captain of Hampshire in 1870 and from 1883 to 1885 and was President of the County Club in 1886. He was a J.P. for the county of Hampshire and a keen huntsman, being secretary of the Hampshire Hunt and later Master of Foxhounds. In the 1870s he lived at Winchfield House, where he opened a new cricket ground in July 1874, where a good standard of country house cricket was played. By 1905 he had moved to Wimpole Hall, Royston, Hertfordshire.
The 1881 Census finds him at Chawton House, Chawton, Hampshire, the home of Montagu G. Knight, aged 36, a magistrate and a B.A. Oxford, and his wife Florena, aged 30 born at Lowmoor, Yorkshire. Also present is Montagus brother Philip H. Knight (who played for Cambridge University in 1854), 45 years old, a widower and a honorary Major retired, and his three daughters Fanny aged 7, Violet L.A. aged 5 and Irene C.L. aged 1. Arthur H. Wood is Montagus brother-in-law, a widower of no occupation, aged 36, who is with his two sons John H. aged 3, and Donald aged 2. (Arthur Woods first wife had just died and he was to remarry some time later). Chawton house had a butler, a footman, two grooms and ten further domestic servants.
