England star batsman Kevin Pietersen is expected to leave hospital on Wednesday after being treated for a setback in his recovery from ankle surgery.

Pietersen has already been ruled out of the Ashes following an operation to correct his Achilles problem after last month's second npower Test at Lord's.

But it was hoped he might be available again, after a six-week recovery period, and he was included in England's initial squad for the NatWest Series of seven one-day internationals against Australia next month.

It emerged on Tuesday morning, however, that 29-year-old Pietersen had been admitted to hospital after developing an infection in the scar tissue.

ECB has now confirmed that worrying turn of events and have since released a statement, updating the likely prognosis for one of their premier match-winners.

"Kevin Pietersen will be discharged from hospital tomorrow after experiencing a complication of the wound made during surgery on his injured right Achilles two-and-a-half weeks ago," the statement said.

"He was seen by a wound care specialist on Tuesday and will receive a course of antibiotics in order to exclude infection."

Both the player and England will wait until next week to find out the likely repercussions of the setback, in terms of a revised recovery period.

"Medical advice is that a complication can occur post surgery and in this case resulted despite Kevin closely following specialist advice on management of the wound," the statement continued.

"He will be reassessed by the specialist later this week and will return to his planned programme of rehabilitation once the wound has fully healed."
