The tedious second Test finally came to a close as the play was called off once the first hour after tea was over. The match meandered meaninglessly as the South African side was more concerned in protecting their 1-0 lead.

The visitors resumed the day at 23 for no loss and it was evident that the South African batsmen would put the shutter down. Graeme Smith and Petersen never looked like taking the attack to the opposition barring a couple of shots. Both Petersen and Smith cleared the boundary ropes once and the Windies bowlers failed to breach their impregnable defenses. After an hour of watchful cricket from Smith, the South African skipper opened up as he deposited Shillingford into the long on stand and then played an expansive cover-drive of the same bowler in the same over. But a ball later the off-spinner had his revenge as he had the South African skipper caught behind.

Amla lived dangerously as he was visibly uncomfortable with his stay in the middle against the spinners. Though he got the boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking the two spinner troubled him regularly. He was dropped at slip by Bravo off Benn but Shillingford removed him by having him caught at short fine leg. Bravo then added more drama to the day as he castled Petersen with a perfect yorker that had his off stump flattened.

That was the last significant success that the West Indian side tasted as Kallis and de Villiers killed the match with some dour batting.
