Day 2:
After a blank day on Thursday, play was commenced in this annual fixture at Leinster Grounds, Rathmines, Dublin, yesterday. The weather conditions were bright, but unsettled, while the wicket was very soft.

 

Scotland won the toss, and opened with Sorrie and Walker, Ward and Gregory sharing the attack. In his first over, Ward sent down a maiden. Runs were slow, and at 29 Sorrie was stumped by Milling. Six runs later saw the fall of the second wicket.

 

The half-century was hoisted in forty minutes, while at the luncheon interval five were down for under a century. A sharp shower fell during the interval, but when play resumed it cleared. The century went up in ninety minutes. Eleven runs later Gregory, breaking from the off, took Thorburn's stumps.

 

Hole batted steadily, and took ninety minutes to register his 37. After the dismissal of the Academical, the remaining wickets fell rapidly, and finally Scotland were all out at 147. Bowling for Ireland, Gregory took eight wickets for 80, and Meldon one for 27.

 

Ireland opened with G. Meldon and Quinlan to face the deliveries of Sievwright and Watt. A poor start was made. G. Meldon was out to a fine catch by Sievwright when the telegraph had registered 7, and at the tea interval three wickets were down for 25.

 

On resuming, cricket was slow, and the first hour's batting yielded but 32 runs. W. Meldon left at 43 in Hole's first over, and in his third over the Scotsman had Read captured at mid-on. Half the side were out for 45.

 

Harrington and Ward were the only remaining batsmen to get double figures, and the innings eventually closed at 98, Scotland thus having a lead of 49 runs. Watt had five wickets for 20, Hole three for 23, and Sievwright had three for 39.

 

Day 3:
The annual match was brought to a conclusion at Dublin, when Scotland won by the narrow margin of 3 runs. The finish was a most exciting one, the last Irish wicket making so fine a resistance that victory for the Island seemed almost assured.

 

The success of the match was much interfered with by the adverse weather, and conflicting with the Horse show at Ballsbridge, the engagement suffered in support from the public. The weather on Saturday was dull and threatening, and played opened, and was continued throughout, before a very poor attendance.

 

On the first day-play was impossible on Thursday-each side had completed an innings. Scotland as a result, went on their second venture with a lead of 49 runs.

 

The innings began badly, Walker being out leg before wicket, with the total at 8. With the Scottish captain Mark Dickson, and Sorrie in partnership there was some lively cricket, but at 22, a smart bit of stumping got rid of the Carlton player. Nine runs later Hole was caught, but with Fergusson as his partner, Dickson hit all around the wicket. Practically off his own bat the Scottish leader took the score to 71 when Fergusson was clean bowled. A perfect rot now set in, Thorburn, Clark, and Dickson all going at 72.

 

Seven wickets were now down, and the last three only put on 11 runs, the innings closing just before lunch. The feature was the hitting of Dickson and the Irish bowling. Dickson had six 4's, one 3, and six 2's; while Harrington took five for 15, and Ward three for 17.

 

Ireland only required 133 to win. Sievwright began the attack, and after W. Meldon had pulled him for 4, the Scotsman's fourth ball was sent high to the boundary, and Clark held it. Six runs later, George Meldon was held on the boundary.

 

The start was good enough from a Scottish point of view, but Lewes, Meldon, and Quinlan put an entirely altered appearance on the game, and they carried the total to 76 before they were separated.

 

The wickets now fell rapidly, and the ninth went at 110. The last wicket made a long stand, and the score was taken to 129, or 3 short of the Scottish aggregate, before the innings closed. Sievwright had five for 32, and Webster three for 30.
