Double hundred for the 26-year-old moves him into top one per cent of Test players

England’s Kevin Pietersen has joined an exclusive club of Test players who have earned more than 900 ratings points in the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen following another stellar performance, against the West Indies in Headingley last week.

The 26-year-old scored 226 – his maiden Test double century – and in the process became just the 21st player in the history of Test cricket to get over 900 ratings points. In all there have been 2,486 people who have played Test cricket so this achievement puts Pietersen in the top one per cent of all time.

In 25 Tests, Pietersen has scored 2,448 runs at an average of 54.40 and in that time has hit eight centuries and nine fifties in just 47 innings.

Only one batsman in the history of the game – Don Bradman – scored more runs in his first 25 Tests than Pietersen. By way of comparison, Bradman compiled 3,194 runs in his first 25 matches at an average of 91.25 scoring 13 centuries and five fifties in the process.

Despite achieving this latest landmark Pietersen still lies in third position in the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen behind Ricky Ponting in first place and Mohammad Yousuf in second. But strong performances for the remainder of the English summer could see him leap-frog both players and claim top spot.

Meanwhile, Pietersen’s captain Michael Vaughan has re-entered the list at 90th position following a very encouraging comeback match for the Yorkshireman.

While there are three batsmen currently enjoying in excess of 900 ratings points only Muttiah Muralidaran can boast the same feat in the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers. The Sri Lanka spinner is a long way ahead of his nearest competitor, Makhaya Ntini, in second position with Anil Kumble of India and South Africa’s Shuan Pollock in joint third place.

England fast bowler Stephen Harmison has halted his downward slide and retains a position in the top 20 of the bowlers’ list while Ryan Sidebottom, who went wicketless in his Test debut six years ago, has now announced himself on the highest stage with eight wickets in the second Test at Headingley. He has entered the list in 108th position.
