Even in the long list of outstanding Australian fast bowlers Glenn McGrath has an honoured place. He is, simply put, one of the great fast bowlers of all time. Height, build, pace, accuracy, swing, deceptiveness, stamina, courage – he has it all. The phrase ``corridor of uncertainty’’ has been coined because of his pinpoint form of attack with which he relentlessly probes a batsman’s weakness and then ruthlessly exploits it. Bowling an unremitting off stump line and an immaculate length McGrath has earned a unique reputation. Even now at 36 he is still going strong and is looking forward eagerly to the Ashes series and the World Cup in the Caribbean. It is an interesting fact that the two Tests England won during the Ashes series in 2005 were games in which McGrath was unable to play. He holds the World Cup record for best figures – seven for 15 against a hapless Namibia in 2003. And a bag of eight for 24 against Pakistan at Perth in 2004-05 gave him the second best figures by an Australian in a Test next only to Arthur Mailey’s nine for 121 against England in 1920-21. He loves winning duels with the best of batsmen and has got the better of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Mike Atherton in stirring contests. The first fast bowler to play 100 Tests and the most successful pace bowler of all time McGrath is a legend in his lifetime.
