They say that he has one of the most odd technique and stance while batting but still he is considered to be among the best batsmen in the world. He doesn’t seem to play much either in the V or off the front foot, but still overcomes these fallibilities to hold a Test average over 40. Chanderpaul’s main problem is that he has a low conversion rate with 17 hundreds but 46 fifities in Tests while 51 half cenuries & 8 tons at the same time in ODIs. He was suffering from a strange disorder of a floating bone in his foot but after surgery in 2000 has become more consistent, so it was obvious that it was affecting his performances. Since then he went on scoring three tons in four Tests against India in 2001-02, and two more in the home series against Australia the following year, including 104 as West Indies successfully chased a world-record 418 for victory in the final Test in Antigua. He followed that up with another good run in South Africa in 2003-04. It all culminated in the Champions Trophy that followed, as he contributed to the victory greatly with a consistent performance. During the contracts dispute he was appointed the West Indian captain and celebrated with a double-century against South Africa and that too in front of his home fans in Guyana. But the captaincy stint didn’t work out well and in 2006, he resigned as captain citing a need to focus on his batting as he went on to score 744 runs at 57.23 in the 2006-07 season with six fifties and two consecutive hundreds.
