Hussey has an enviable record of scoring 15313 First Class runs before making an appearance for the national team and many pundits, domestic as well as international, are puzzled by this failure to his Test claims. Since making his Test debut, he has been nicknamed Mr Cricket, as he has proven to be dependable for whatever teams he plays for. He also owns the record for being the fastest player to score 1000 Test runs after taking only 166 days to overtake England's Andrew Strauss. After 22 Tests his mean of 78.14 is second only to Sir Don's and he is trying hard not to fall from greatness. He made a century in only his second Test match, following it up with three more hundreds in his first summer, and in the second season, scored four consecutive fifties and a century at Perth in the Ashes 2006 at home. Hussey underlined his credentials in the shorter version too, when picked in the ODI team for New Zealand in 2005, and achieved such outrageous figures that it took 29 matches for his average to drop below 100. His calm outlook, strong team qualities and ability to perform in both forms of the game earned him the captaincy for the Chappell-Hadlee Series in 2007, but it quickly became a tournament to forget with three severe losses. Subsequently the 2007 World Cup with just 87 runs became one of his rare failures in a brief period in the game. He was bought by the Chennai Super Kings to play in the IPL and he redeemed their decision by scoring one of the fastest hundreds in the tournament.
