A left handed opening batsman Ed Joyces is an interesting tale. Born in Dublin he was the star player for Ireland scoring 758 runs in 14 matches at the ICC Trophy level between 2001 and 2005 at an average of 84.22. He had a golden run in the 2005 tournament making two hundreds and two fifties in five innings to help Ireland top Group A and qualify for the 2007 World Cup. Wisden was effusive in praise: The batsman of the tournament was Ed Joyce the stylish Middlesex left-hander, 75 runs behind Zuiderent (of Holland) on aggregate but way ahead of the pack of on quality. He chose July 1 the day he finally qualified by residence to play for England to score his first international century for Ireland, against Bermuda. Three days later he contributed a magnificently paced 115 not out as Ireland recovered from 23 for four to beat the UAE by two wickets in the final over. In the title clash against Scotland he scored a gallant 81. So by the time of the World Cup Joyce could well be turning out for England. He made his ODI debut in 2006 and though he has scored just 31 runs in three matches he is reckoned to be one with a future
