Although Chertsey matches have generally not been included, an exception is made in this case because of the strength of the Chertsey team: almost a full Surrey side except for T White. The England team was barring Hampshire, but it includes some strong players alongside a few lesser lights. It is possible that Irons is to be identified with John I'ons, who scored 197 in a match in 1783, according to the Sporting Magazine in 1795. A return match was advertised for the Artillery Ground on 15 September but no details have been found and it may not have taken place.
