This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project - research is continuing on this scorecard which can be expected to change.
This return game was drawn, as had been the earlier encounter between these two teams at Cardiff in June. Under the unsatisfactory points scoring system, both teams were keen to avoid defeat as it would have ended their Championship aspirations. The Northamptonshire declaration left Glamorgan 196 runs to win in 90 minutes. On the first day no play was possible before 5.00 pm and play ended early at 6.15 pm. For Glamorgan, J H Brain top-scored in the match with 36 not out, and Creber took 9 wickets in the match for 143 runs. Newspaper reports praised W H Brain's wicket-keeping in the Northamptonshire first innings, when he had a hand in six dismissals with 4 catches and 2 stumpings. It was a new record for the Championship, exceeding the 5 dismissals made by C E Cobb for Buckinghamshire on three separate occasions. His 6 dismissals in the match were the joint highest of the season. He also batted for an hour in the Glamorgan second innings for just 4 runs to help save the match. During the Northamptonshire second innings when his score was 18, Pool reached the career milestone of one thousand runs in championship matches.
