Northamptonshire won by an innings and 25 runs at 6.15 pm on the second day. For the winners, Thompson played the leading role carrying his bat with an innings of 167 not out, including 10 fours, 8 threes and 29 twos scored in 5½ hours, and taking 10 wickets in the match for 147 runs, including 8 for 76 in the Surrey 2nd XI first innings. It was statistically the best all round match performance during the season. His feat of 'carrying his bat' was achieved on four other occasions during the season. Thompson's feat of carrying his bat through the home side's innings was matched on three other occasions during the season. Cox scored 60. In the Northamptonshire innings, Thompson and Cox put on 110 runs for the second wicket, and Thompson and Weston 66 for the tenth wicket, which was the third highest partnership for that wicket during the season. For the losers, Montgomery's 59 included 3 fours. Gooder strained his knee badly when bowling an hour before the close of play on the first day, and could take no further part in the match. B C Smith acted as the substitute fielder.
