Durham won this return match by nine wickets on the second day, the morning session being extended for five minutes to allow the match to be completed before lunch. The match between the two sides at Darlington in June had also been won by Durham. For Durham, Morris took 11 wickets in the match for 105 runs, including 8 for 62 in the Cheshire first innings. All but one of his victims was clean bowled. Ashley top-scored with 43, which contained 3 fours. For Cheshire, there were 7 fours in Moorhouse's 66 not out and 8 fours in Wild's 41. In the Cheshire second innings on the second day, Pickersgill kept wicket for Durham in place of J W Mole who was injured. Rev F C L Hamilton had been appointed the Cheshire captain for the season, but this was the only match he played. This was the first use of the ground for a Championship match.
