Cambridgeshire won this return match by 38 runs, taking the last wicket with the first ball of the final over. They did not enforce the follow on and set Norfolk a target of 294 in 2 hours 45 minutes; the visitors reached 227 for five wickets but then collapsed. Norfolk had won the match between the two sides at Norwich earlier in the month but here were weakened by war duties, giving debuts to no fewer than four players. For the winners there were 14 fours in Loveday's 128 and 2 fives and 6 fours in Rich's 66. Gorringe scored 57 with 1 five and 9 fours in the first innings and 55 in the second. Loveday and Gorringe added 169 for the second wicket in the Cambridgeshire first innings and then Loveday and Rich put on 102 for the seventh wicket, a partnership that took just 45 minutes. Gorringe, who was playing in his only Championship match, also took 5 wickets for 70 runs in the Norfolk first innings and 5 for 109 in their second, giving him match figures of 10 for 179. For Norfolk there were 1 six and 10 fours in Fulcher's 66, 7 fours in Stephenson's 63 and 1 six and 20 fours in Stevens's 111, an innings that took only 58 minutes and saw him and Stephenson add 145 runs for the third wicket in the Norfolk second innings. Watson took 5 wickets for 55 runs in the Cambridgeshire second innings whilst Hadley took what would be his only Championship wicket with his very first ball. In the absence of a regular keeper, Stevens started as custodian but Pretheroe took over the gloves after lunch on the first day. Having already made 2 dismissals Stevens then took 2 catches at slip.
