Player: | G Bean |
George Bean failed to establish himself in the Nottinghamshire XI and moved south, where for many years he was to be found batting for Sussex at Hove. A brilliant cutter, he made the most of what were at the time the best wickets in England. He was also a useful medium pace bowler, and a good fielder at cover. His best year was 1891, when he topped the Sussex averages, made 145* and 92 against Nottinghamshire, and was selected to tour Australia. He played three Tests on the tour without distinguishing himself, and a complete loss of county form in 1892 led to him dropping out of contention for England. His form returned in 1893 however, and he played five more seasons for Sussex before retiring, and joining the ground staff at Lord's, where he remained until his death.
