Profile of Bernard Hedges
by Dr.A.K.Hignell - Hon Statistician and Historian to Glamorgan CCC

Player:B Hedges

During Bernard Hedges` 18 year career with Glamorgan, he amassed over 17,000 first-class runs and scored the county`s first ever century in one day cricket with 103 against Somerset in their Gillette Cup match at the Arms Park in 1963.

The Pontypridd-born batsman joined the county`s staff in 1950 after completing his National Service, and initially played in the middle-order. He moved up to open the batting in the late 1950`s, and his sound technique and steadfast temperament allowed him to become a successful opening batsman. Hedges was also a fine player of spin bowling, and displayed nimble footwork against the slow bowlers. He was rarely ill at ease on a turning wicket, and one of his finest innings was the 139 made against Nottinghamshire on a turning wicket at Stradey Park, Llanelli when he deftly mastered the wiles of Australian leg-spinner Bruce Dooland.

In his youth, Hedges had been a good rugby player with Pontypridd and Swansea, and was even selected to play in a final Welsh Trial.
