HARRIS, Hon. George Robert Canning.

Born at St Annes, Trinidad, 3rd February 1851.
Died at Belmont, Faversham, Kent, 24th March 1932.
The son of George Francis Robert, the 3rd Lord Harris, he was educated at Eton, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1868-70, being captain in 1870. He went up to Christ Church, Oxford, where he was a member of the University cricket eleven 1871-74. In all he played in 224 first-class matches, including 157 for Kent 1870-1911, being captain 1871-89, and four Test Matches, all of which he captained. He toured America in 1872 and Australia 1878/9. He was President of Kent in 1875, Hon.Secretary 1875-80 and for most of his life a Committee member. He was President of M.C.C. in 1895, a Trustee 1906-16 and Hon.Treasurer 1916 until his death. One of the most influential men in cricket in his day he was a fearless arbiter of the laws of the game.
Under-Secretary of State for India 1885-86, Under-Secretary of State for War 1886-89, Governor of Bombay 1890-95 and Lord in Waiting to Queen Victoria 1895-1900. He was Deputy-Chairman of East Kent Quarter Sessions 1877-98 and Joint Chairman from then. A J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant of Kent.
The 1881 Census finds him boarding at 64 Ebury Street, Hanover Square, London, aged 30, Peer of England, Baron, with his wife Lucy A., aged 29, Peeress Baroness.
