HIRST, Edward Theodore.
Amateur.
Born at New House, Deighton, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, 6th May 1857.
Died at Barnwood, Gloucestershire, 26th October 1914.
He was the third son of William Edwards Hirst, J.P., of Lascelles Hall, Huddersfield. He was educated at Rugby, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1874-76, he went up to Balliol College, Oxford, and was a member of the University cricket eleven 1878-80, winning his blue in all three years. He also won his blue for rugby football in 1877 and 1879-80. He was first selected for Yorkshire CCC in 1877 and played in 39 first-class matches between then and 1888, 21 of them for Yorkshire. He became a solicitor in Leeds. In 1905 he was living at Glaine Orme, Llandudno, North Wales.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at Lascelles Hall, Lepton, Yorkshire, with his father William Edward, aged 60, a woollen manufacturer. His mother Hannah aged 50 was also present as was his elder brother Ernest William, who also played for Yorkshire in two matches in 1881, aged 26, a woollen manufacturer. He is shown as aged 23 and a clerk Oxford. His two younger brothers are Francis Joseph aged 20, an Oxford undergraduate and Philip Leslie aged 17, a scholar. There are five domestic servants.
