Hameed-Farhat create history
by Muhammad Asim

Scorecard:Pakistan v New Zealand
Player:Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed

On December 7, by putting on 197 runs for the opening wicket against the hapless Kiwis in the last game of the five-match ODI series at Rawalpindi, Pakistan openers, Yasir Hameed and Imran Farhat achieved something which even Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge - the greatest one-day opening pair of the past – couldn’t achieve with their 15 century opening-stands Haynes and Greenidge opened for West Indies together in a period ranging from 1979 to 1991 but only once among their 102 outings, they shared a hundred run opening partnership for two consecutive limited-overs international innings. Hameed and Farhat’s immortal feat thus created a world record of being the very first instance, in the 33-year-old history of the shorter version of the game, when the same opening pair registered century stands in three or more successive innings of a side. Interestingly, there is one other occasion when century stands were shared for a side in three consecutive ODI’s but it involved three different openers. (see the table below for full details).

Curiously enough, two months ago Farhat shared three hundred partnerships in consecutive innings with Taufeeq Umar, in the two-Test series against South Africa. Now by doing the same in the other form of the game with Yasir, Imran became only the second batsman in all international cricket history, after Geoffrey Boycott of England, to be involved in atleast three successive century opening stands in both forms of the game. Boycott shared three consecutive hundred partnerships with John Edrich in the 4th and 5th Tests of the 1970-71 Ashes Series at Melbourne and Adelaide respectively. For reader’s interest the accompanying table has the complete details.
