The tall and angular Matthew Elliott played for Glamorgan in 2000, during which the county reached the final of the Benson and Hedges Cup at Lord`s. The left-handed opening batsman also scored four centuries for the Welsh county and helped to lay the foundation of several successful run chases, proving his reputation as technically the best batsman in Australia.

 

The Victorian has played in 20 Tests, although his international career was halted as he damaged a knee colliding in the field with Mark Waugh at Sydney in 1996-97. He subsequently regained full fitness and was the leading run scorer on the Ashes tour in 1997, during which he made a highly impressive 199 in the Test Match at Headingley.

 

He was one of Wisden`s Cricketer of the Year in 1998, and has twice been Sheffield Shield Player of the Year. Elliott returned to the U.K. in 2002 when he played as Yorkshire`s overseas professional.

 

Elliott rejoined Glamorgan in 2004, and enjoyed another successful summer, finishing as their leading run-scorer in first-class cricket, with 1346 runs to his name. During 2004 he also returned to the Australian Test side for the Test series with Sri Lanka.

 

Mid-way through the 2005 season Elliott sustained another serious knee injury which forced him to miss the rest of the season. After rehabilitation in Australia, he returned to State cricket, and in 2006/07 was the Ford Ranger Player of the Year in Australian one-day cricket.

 

`Herb` originally agreed to rejoin Yorkshire for the start of the 2007 season as a temporary replacement for Younis Khan who was on World Cup duty. But the early elimination of Pakistan from the one-day competition meant that Younis was now fully available for Yorkshire. With Jimmy Maher not joining Glamorgan until mid-May, Elliott returned instead to Wales for the first six weeks of the 2007 season.
