SHUTER, John.
Amateur.
Born at Thornton Heath, Surrey, 9th February 1855.
Died at Eastbourne, Sussex, 5th July 1920.
The son of Leonard Shuter, The Lodge, Morden, Surrey, he was educated at Winchester, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1871-73.He played in one match for Kent in 1874 and in 1877 he played his first game for Surrey. In all he played 306 first-class matches, of which 274 were for Surrey and one a Test Match. He was captain of Surrey 1880-93 and a Test selector in 1912. He was appointed secretary of Surrey in 1920. His brother Leonard A. played for Surrey 1876-83. He was a timber merchant and cooper in business with his father and brother.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at Vale Mascal, North Cray. Kent, with his father Leonard, aged 56, a stave timber merchant and cooper, and his mother Caroline, aged 55. He is aged 26, unmarried, and also a stave timber merchant and cooper. His two sisters are Ethel aged 22 and Fanny aged 21. There are two visitors, the Rev. Charles William Bartholomew, the rector of Glympton, Oxfordshire, aged 55 and his wife Fanny, aged 36. There are seven domestic servants.
