WYNYARD, Edward George.
Amateur.
Born at Saharanpur, India, 1st April 1861.
Died at Knotty Green, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, 30th October 1936.
The son of William Wynyard, of North End House, Hursley, Hampshire, he was educated at Charterhouse, where he left in 1877, going on to St EdwardÂ’s School, Oxford, where he was a member of the cricket and football elevens. He served with the Kings Liverpool Regiment 1883-90, taking part in the Burmese Expedition 1885-7 being mentioned in despatches twice. He was later awarded the D.S.O. and the Medal of the Royal Humane Society. became a Captain in the Welsh Regiment in 1890 and was an instructor in military engineering at the Royal Military College 1890-1902 and retired as a Major 1903. He rejoined with the Liverpool Regiment in September 1914, was appointed to the Middlesex Regiment November 1916 and retired again in April 1919. He made his first-class debut for Hampshire in 1878 and made 154 first-class appearances in all, including 71 for Hampshire, making his last appearance for the MCC in 1912. He played in three Test Matches and toured the West Indies 1904/5, South Africa 1905/6 and 1909/10, New Zealand 1906/7, North America 1907 and Egypt 1909. He was the assistant secretary of the MCC 1911 and a member of the MCC Committee 1920-24. An all-round sportsman he played for Old Carthusians in the 1881 F.A. Cup Final, won the International Toboggan Race at Davos Platz in 1895 and was a noted figure skater.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at North End House, Hursley, Hampshire, aged 20, a lieutenant 1st Regiment Warwick Militia, the home of his father William, aged 64 born in Africa, Bengal Civil Service, retired, and his mother Isabella J. aged 42 born in Switzerland. Also present are his sisters Eleanor L. aged 23, Lilly J. aged 21, Amy E, aged 14 and Rose M. also aged 14, and his brother Henry B.W., aged 1. There is a Prussian governess and six domestic servants.
