In a yet another clinical performance by New South Wales, they thrashed Somerset in all departments. The Australian outfit bowled and fielded exceptionally well to restrict the Sabres to a mere 111, on a day they would have liked at least 50 more, and then in a ruthless manner scaled the meagre requirement in less than 12 overs.

 

In the end the English side hardly looked even half as good as their Australian counterparts and were beaten by six wickets. The defeat ended their run in the tournament and NSW are now sure of of their place in the final four.

 

New South Wales started in an explosive manner as David Warner went ballistic. He was ruthless and used everything from power to guile, making the Somerset bowlers look no better then a mediocre club attack.

 

Before getting out after scoring a smashing 40 off only 16 balls, he carted almost every bowler to all parts of the park. He was looking for the fastest 50 of the tournament as after hitting Banks for 14 in three deliveries, he again went over the top only to find Jos Butler at the boundary.

 

Warner's absence though wasn't felt for long as Daniel Smith walked in and looked to replicate his opener. He smashed Peter Trego for three boundaries in the seventh over and the end of Somerset in the CLT20 was brought closer by these.

 

Zander de Bruyn did pick up two wickets in consecutive delieveries in the ninth over and Moises Henriques also fell in the next over but by then the damage had already been done. Simon Katich, after the fall of these wickets, combined with Steven Smith to finish the formalities.

 

In the afternoon, Katich chose to field in a must-win game for both the sides. Openers looked good in their brief stay on the wicket but once wickets started falling, they fell in a heap. From 24 for no loss the Sabres skittled to 44 for five and since the run-rate was never electric, momentum never went their side.

 

C Kieswetter was the first one to fall trying to attempt the first big shot of the game. He was fooled by Stuart Clark and the right-hander only managed to top-edge one high up to Katich at mid-on. Two balls later skipper Justin Langer stepped out to better the run-rate and chipped the ball off his stumps over the infield.

 

The leather though went straight to Hauritz on the ropes at deep midwicket. From here on three more wickets fell quickly and the Sabres in a must-win game, that too with a good run-rate hardly could even try to get a move-on.

 

A little sanity was brought in by De Bruyn and Banks as the duo added 37 runs but then fell in the space of addition of four runs. It was another display of swashbuckling batting by Wes Durston in the end that took the Somerset Sabres to some total but a look at the names of the batting line-up of New South Wales gave the feeling that this total was nowhere close to being enough.
