Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel bowled with intent, venom and fire to rout England for 180 in 47.5 overs to squash visitors hopes of sealing the series. The pair claimed eight wickets between them, including four inside the first ten overs alone, to bundle England out inside two sessions. The top scorer for England was Paul Collingwood who scored counterattacking 47. In reply, South African openers negotiated 12 tricky overs in gloomy conditions reaching 29 for 0.

 

Only one thing went well for Strauss in the morning and that was winning the toss. The slide began when Strauss (0, 1 ball) clipped the first ball of the match straight to Amla at backward square leg who was brilliant enough to snap a brilliant catch. Once Strauss departed the batting fell apart like a house of cards as wickets tumbled. The top order was ripped apart by Morne Morkel as Trott (5, 8 balls, 1x4), Pietersen (7, 16 balls, 1x4) and Cook (21, 31 balls, 2x4) had no answer to the paceman's thunderbolts. At 39 for 4 in 9.4 overs it was left to Collingwood (47, 61 balls, 5x4, 2x6) and Bell (35, 86 balls, 6x4) to give some respectability to the innings and the pair did not disappoint. The pair added 76 runs in 20.5 overs before disaster struck again.

 

Ryan McLaren found Collingwood's leading edge which lobbed towards point where Duminy took an easy catch. Bell, on 34, survived a sharp chance at gully but it did not prove costly. Steyn prised him out when an inswinger from the paceman crept through his half-formed defences. Prior (14, 25 balls, 2x4) counterattacked but he did not last long. Broad (13, 13 balls, 2x4) and Swann (27, 27 balls, 3x4, 1x6) swung their bats to cash some quick runs but the duo did not last long. Steyn claimed the final two wickets to end with a well-earned five-fer as England were rolled over inside 48 overs.
