An impressive all-round performance by Andrew Symonds (three wickets and 35 runs) fetched Deccan Chargers their third straight win in the DLF IPL 3 at the Barabati stadium here on Sunday.

The home ground is turning out to a lucky venue for the host as Deccan Chargers snatched victory from jaws of defeat. More than his runs, it was Andrew’s wickets which came at crucial time that fetched an unlikely win for his side. Bowling seam up, Andrew first snared the dangerous looking Henriques who had warmed up for the occasion by stroking two delightful boundaries. The batsman sliced a shot to R.P.Singh who made amends for his earlier miss. In his next over, the 19th of the innings, Symonds struck twice first by removing the well settled Karthik with a brilliant return catch and then dismissed Mishra to set up the victory. Delhi Daredevils needed 14 runs off Vaas’ last over. The Sri Lankan was ramrod straight as Yogesh Nagar missed a swipe and then the veteran ran out Ladda. Deccan had won by 11 runs and Delhi lost its third straight match.

Earlier David Warner started off like a runaway train. He biffed R.P Singh for 20 runs in the second over and grabbed the limelight from Shewag. Delhi was on course when Ohja struck by removing Shewag but Warner continued to plunder runs. Delhi scored 85 for one in 10 overs. But a needless run signaled the end of Warner with R.P Singh firing in an accurate throw from point. The bowlers made amends for his horror show with the ball with that brilliant piece of fielding. Warner’s dismissal slowed the things as Deccan spinners slipped in a few quiet overs. Captain Dinesh Karthik induced the urgency into the chase by counter attacking the bowlers and kept his side in contention. Karthik made a quickfire 45 off 27 balls but had little support from the other end. The final twist in tale was provided by Andrew Symonds who prised out three wickets in the business end of the chase.

In the evening, Karthik opted to attack with his spinner Mishra when Chargers batted first. The ploy worked when Amit Mishra bowled MD Mishra with a googly in the first over. However, Gibbs smacked Nannes for 14 runs to restore sanity. Gilchrist was unfazed by spin and looked threatening when he was snared by Ladda for 24runs off 14 balls. Gibbs’ promising innings was nipped in the bud when he sliced a shot to Henriques at backward point off a ball which bounced and spun from Nagar. It was left for Rohit Sharma and Symonds to lend stability to the innings.

Symonds was warming up for the death overs by tonking a four and a six off Yogesh Nagar when he miscued a shot off Henriques’ first over. However, Suman joined Rohit Sharma and the two played the big shots when it mattered as Deccan Chargers scored 64 runs in the last six overs.
