Anthony Woolley was embroiled in controversy before he had even begun his professional career, as captain Dominic Cork named him as one of four players on the county staff that he would rather not have had. Making such a feeling public was clumsy on Corks behalf, even if there was a valid point about the wisdom of giving a contract to a 28 year old new to County cricket. Woolleys one First-class appearance wasnt terribly successfully, with his bowling being especially enjoyed by Nasser Hussain and with Woolley being run out by skipper Cork for 1 in the 2nd innings. With his medium pace and handy lower order batting, it is no surprise that he found more openings in the one-day game, and although he could be expensive, his finest performance was when he bowled superbly tightly against a strong Surrey line up at The Oval in only his second Sunday league match in May 1999. Although Woolleys professional career lasted just one season, he has remained one of the leading all rounders in the Derbyshire Premier league, where he is captain of Alvaston & Boulton.
