Player:SR Tendulkar

DateLine: 19th February 2007

The title of the worlds best batsman sits lightly on the strong shoulders of Sachin Tendulkar as well as all the fame, the adulation, the heady praise and other accolades that he has received over the past 17 years. That title itself is the kind of exalted status that no other Indian cricketer could have a claim to in the past 75 years. Tendulkar really has everything that is there in any cricket manual and he has added a few chapters of his own. The figures against his name are already of the mind boggling and eye rubbing variety and one can really let his imagination run amok as to where it will all end a few years from now. He has humbled purveyors of pace and swing, cut and spin and has scored a mountain of runs in both Tests and ODIs. He has got runs, hundreds and double hundreds all round the world. The thought of having Tendulkar as an opponent frequently gives bowlers bad dreams. Just ask Shane Warne! The manner in which Tendulkar takes the bowlers apart it drives them to a nervous depression. He has them in such a tizzy with a trail of devastating shots that at last in desperation and disgusted with life as it were the bowler has to either look at the Heavens for Divine help or closer to earth implore with the captain to take him off. ``There is no use bowling to this bloke, has been the general refrain of bowlers the world over. When you bowl to him there aren't enough tricks; when you write about him there aren't enough words. He is such a complete batsman that he can bat all day and everyday if the need arises. After all with the record 35 centuries he is no stranger to long stays at the crease in Test matches. And he makes a comfortable transition to limited overs cricket making strokes that enthrall, excite and entertain and boost the run rate. Long may the king of cricket regale his willing and joyful subjects!
