Promoted Major General 1926, promoted Lieutenant General 1933, promoted General 1937; 1927–1931 Chief of Staff (Director of Staff Duties); 1931–1933 commanded 4th Division at Colchester; 1933–1936 Director-General of the Territorial Army; 1936–April 1940 Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Malta; 1938–1941 ADC to King; retired 1940. DSO 1917, CMG 1919, CB 1926, KCB 1935, GCB 1941.
