The match ended in contoversy, stumps being called 40 minutes early after the South Canterbury captain, E Fowler, objected to the number of people transgressing on the ground. According to the Timaru Herald this was not so and it was probably because it was so cold that the captain wanted to get his players off the field as the English XI had won. This course of events led to bad feeling between the public and their home team.
