Presented here under is a brief review of Pakistan’s pervious test matches at Healingley Leeds:

1962:

Pakistan lost their first ever Test match at Healingley by an innings and 117 runs just inside three days. To the great disarray of their supporters Pakistan lost 17 wickets for 238 runs in little less than 6 hours on the third day. They were shot out for 130 in the first and 180 in the second innings. Opener Alimuddin who had earlier scored a brilliant century (109) against the same opponent in the previous home series batted confidentaly to score two fighting fifties in the match (50 & 60). Earlier England put into bat by Javed Burki piled up a total of 428. Peter Parfitt, who was then in tremendous form, scored yet another century (119), his third against Pakistan in 4 successive tests. Parfitt went on to score one more in the next test at Trent Bridge Nottingham. Despite Pakistan’s poor over all performance. Munir Malik, who casted in the same mould like Fazal Mehmood, Bowled his heart out and was pick of the Pakistan attack with 5 for 128 in 49 overs. Another notable event of the match was F.S Trueman’s claming of 200th wicket by dismissing Pakistan captain in the first innings. Trueman by the next three years claimed another hundred to become the first bowler ever to claim test 300 wickets.

1971: LOST BY 25 RUNS

Ray Illing worth led England and Intekhab Alam the visitors. Geoff Boycott (112) and Basid D’ Oliveria (74) were the Chief Contributors in England’s total of 316 in the first innings. Pakistan gained 24 runs lead by virtue of some magnificent batting display by Zaheer Abbas (72) Wasim Bari (63) and Mushtaq Muhammad (57) Richard Hutton son of Sir Len Hutton, N.Gifford and Basil D’olivera all claimed 3 wickets each. Salim Altaf bowled superbly to claim 4 for 11 off 14.3 overs, 9 of which were maiden as England were contained to 264 in the second. D’oliveria again scored a half century (72) and Warwickshire batsman Dennis Ammis scored (56). Set to score 231 runs in 385 minutes. Pakistan narrowly failed by 25 runs despite the lone heroic innings of 91 by left handed Sadiq Mohammad. Pakistan earlier had displayed a tremendous performance in the first test and was considered as better of the two teams but were only unfortunate to lose that series.

1974: DRAWN

England needed 44 runs and Pakistan 4 wickets when rain ended the match prematurely. It was a close match, Pakistan were dismissed for scores of 275 & 179 in the two innings. Majid Khan (75) and Sarfaraz Nawaz (53) scored fifties. Pakistan's pacetrio of Asif Masood, Sarfaraz Nawaz and Imran Khan took 13 of 16 English wickets which fell in their scores of 183 & 238 – 6. John Edrich (70) M.H. Deness (44) and KWR Fletcher (67 NO) had rescued England. M.H. Dennessled England and Intekhab Alam Pakistan.

1978: DRAWN

Sarfaraz Nawaz once again bowled gallantly and claimed 5 for 39 in England’s total of 119 for 7. Earlier Left Handed Sadiq Mohammad stood like a rock to score 97 in Pakistan’s first innings total of 201. Rain badly marred the match and only little over 10 hours play was possible. Pakistan earlier had lost at Edgbaston and Lords the First and Second tests and eventually the series.

1982: LOST BY 3 WICKETS

Pakistan lost by 3 wickets, Pakistan were led by Imran Khan and England by RGD Willis, in another close match. Pakistan scored 275 (Muddasar Nazar 65, Jeved Miandad 54 and Imran Khan 67 No.) England conceded slender lead and scored 256. Pakistan then scored 199 (Javed Miandad 52 & Imran Khan 46). England at 1997 in were tight corner but Vick Marks and RwTaylor finally survived to bring England home anarrow victory. Two of history’s greatest allranders ever Imran Khan and Ian Bottham exhibted great display of batting and bowling – Botham (57 & 4 and 9 wickets runs for 144) and Imran Khan (67 No & 46 and 8 wickets for 115 runs) in this match.

1987: WON BY AN INNINGS AND 18 RUNS

Pakistan claimed their first ever victory at Headingley leeds, they out classed England by an innings & 18 runs. England scored 136 & 199 as skipper & Man of the Match Imran Khan claimed 3/37 & 7/40 Salim Malik (99) batted for 5 ½ hours and his brother in law Ijaz Ahmed scored 50. Niel Foster took 8 for 107.

1992 23 – 26 JULY: LOST BY 6 WICKETS

England won by 6 wickets to level the series at that stage. Pakistan however wenton to won the next and final test at the Oval and eventually won that series. Despite Pakistan’s defeat Headingley was again a hunting ground for Salem Malek who scored two un beaten innings of 82 & 84. Niel Mallender for England took 8 wickets. Waqar Younis took 7 and Mushtaq Ahmed the leggie still in contention to be included in the current series took 5 wickets. Scores: Pakistan 197 & 221 and England 320 & 99 -- 4.

1996: DRAWN

Pakistan put into bat piled up 448, though Saeed Anwar who was so consistent in those days was an exceptional failure. Ijaz Ahmed scored 141, Moin Khan 105, Salim Malik 55 and Asif Mujtaba 51 England did not lag behind but earned 53 runs lead. AJ Stewart (113) and NV Knight (113) scored centuries. Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Mushtaq Ahmed all toiled up yet took three wickets each. Inzamamul Haq (65) and Ijaz Ahmed 152 enabled Pakistan to reach 242 for 7 in the second innings, the match ended in a draw.
