He was educated at Sheffield College.

A lower order right-hand batsman and a right-hand fast round-arm bowler who fielded mostly at point or slip. His club cricket was played with the Longsight and Manchester clubs.

On 26th and 27th May 1871 he was selected to play for Lancashire against Derbyshire at Old Trafford. He scored 2 and 1 batting at number ten, and took two wickets for 22 runs. Derbyshire won by an innings and 11 runs.

His last match for the county was on 5th to 7th July 1877, at Old Trafford against Nottinghamshire, when he scored 0 and 3 not out and did not get the chance to bowl as W.McIntyre and Alex Watson bowled through both Notts innings unchanged.

In August 1877 he played for Eighteen of Broughton against the United South of England XI, scoring 6 and 24. In 1880 he played for Eighteen of Longsight against the Australian tourists, and bowled with some success.

The 1881 Census finds him living at 122 Oxford Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, the home of his parents George, aged 68 born at Chatham, Kent, a commercial traveller, and Sarah, aged 66 born at Rochester, Kent. He is unmarried, aged 28 born at Kingsland, Middlesex, a grey cloth agent. His three unmarried sisters Sarah A. aged 44 born at Chatham, Elizabeth O. aged 40 born Kennington, Surrey and Eleanor, aged 34 also born Kennington, were all Berlin wool dealers. A fourth unmarried sister was Florence, aged 24 born at Islington, Middlesex.
