Died 19.3.1911 Newton Heath, Manchester.

5ft. 7 inches tall and weighing between 11 and 12 stone, he was a lower order right-hand batsman, a right-hand fast round arm bowler and occasional wicket-keeper. He first came to notice on the 24th and 25th June 1864, when he appeared for Fifteen Colts of Lancashire against the Gentlemen of Lancashire at the old Wavertree Ground, Liverpool.. He scored 0 and 4 and took one catch.

His first recorded engagement was at the Manchester Club from 1870 to 1873. In 1871 he appeared in two matches for Lancashire; against Derbyshire at Old Trafford on 26th and 27th May, when he scored 5 and 28 not out, took 2 wickets for 52 runs, and took a catch. On 19th to 21st June, at Gravesend, against Kent he scored 9 not out and 0 and took one wicket for 27 runs.

After 1873 he is reported to have been engaged by "various other clubs," so far not recorded. In 1878 until 1882 he was engaged at the Stockport Club and during this period played twice for Cheshire, scoring 76 runs in his three innings, with a top score of 65.

During his time with Manchester he lived at 4 Sandal Street, Ridgway, Manchester, but during his time at Stockport moved to that town.

There is no sign of him in the 1881 Census, but in 1901 he is living at 3 Mangnall Street, Manchester, aged 57, a beer retailer and professional cricketer, working at home, with his wife Penninah aged 56 born at Oldham, and his two unmarried sons, Alfred aged 33 a packer for shipping, and Arthur aged 23 an iron fitter. Also present is his married daughter Alice Broadbent aged 29, and her husband William aged 34 a commercial clerk, and their two daughters Clara aged 7 and Bertha aged 5.
