Schoolmaster George Cording epitomised the spirit amongst the band of amateur players by devoting his spare time to Glamorgan C.C.C. for many years. Cording was a highly successful batsman at club level and during his summer holidays, he helped the county out as a middle order batsman and occasional wicket-keeper. Even after he had retired from playing, he continued to promote the game amongst the schoolboys of South Wales, and helped to generate enthusiasm for the game.

 

The right-handed batsman made his Glamorgan debut against Berkshire in 1900, but in the years before the Great War, Cording`s teaching commitments restricted his appearances for the county. He became available on a regular basis after the Great War, and in 1921 at the age of 43, Cording was Glamorgan`s wicket-keeper in their inaugural County Championship match in 1921. later in the season Cording made 101 against Worcestershire at Swansea, thereby becoming the club`s oldest player to hit a maiden Championship century.

 

The jovial and popular schoolmaster also gave a helping hand to Glamorgan during the Second World War as the club officials attempted to maintain interest, and raise funds for the War Effort by arranging friendly fixtures in 1944 and 1945. Despite being well into his sixties, Cording acted as a tireless Match Secretary, and made sure that the public of South Wales had an opportunity of watching some cricket.
