HUMPHREYS, Walter Alexander.
Professional.
Born at Southsea, Hampshire, 28th October 1849.
Died at Brighton, Sussex, 23rd March 1924.
He was the brother of G.T.Humphreys (Sussex 1869-86) and the father of W.A. junior (Sussex 1898-1900). His family had moved into Sussex when he was only three weeks old, so he was first selected for Sussex in 1871 and thereafter played in 273 first-class matches 248 of them for Sussex (1871-96) and two of them for Hampshire (1900). He toured Australia with Stoddard in 1894-95. In 1879 he was living at 25 New Road, Brighton and was by trade a shoemaker.
The 1881 Census lists him as living at 67 Upper North Street, Brighton, aged 31, a bootmaker. His wife is Mary Ann aged 38 and there are three daughters and a son. Florence aged 9, Alice aged 7, Walter aged 2 and Rose aged two months. His sister-in-law Miss Ellen Roberts, aged 29, a general servant, is also present as are two lodgers Margaret Packford aged 24 and her one year old son Charles, both born in Ireland.
