JACKSON, Leonard.
Professional.
Born at Holme Hurst, Norton Woodseats, Yorkshire, 8th April 1848.
Died at Sheffield, Yorkshire, 21st March 1887.
A metal grinder, living at Sheffield, he was born at the border village of Norton Woodseats, arguably in Derbyshire. His first professional engagement was at the Breckfield Club, Liverpool, in 1869, and in 1872 and 1873 he was at Wakefield. He was at Hull Town Club from 1874 until 1880. While there, in 1875, he played for the North against the South at the Hull ground when McIntyre failed to turn up in time and he, the club professional, was fielded as a substitute. Two years later, assuming his birthplace to be Derbyshire, he played in five further first-class matches for that county 1877-82. He was landlord of the Land of Green Ginger Hotel at Hull and later from 1881 the Crown and Cushion Hotel.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was still at the Land of Green Ginger, aged 31, a hotel keeper, together with his wife Mary, aged 31, three sons and a daughter. The eldest son was William Leonard aged 10, born at Sheffield, as were Herbert aged 7, and Bernard aged 5. His daughter Ida aged 2 was born at Hull. There were also two domestic servants.
