by Don Ambrose

Player:TG Ridley

RIDLEY, Thomas Glynn.
Amateur.
Born at Cullercoats, Northumberland, 20th July 1858.
Died at Sea Point, Cape Town, South Africa, 30th June 1945.
He was a son of T. Ridley, Framlington Place, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and was educated at Uppingham, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1876-78 and the rugby fifteen 1876-77. He went up to Exeter College, Oxford, and although he appeared in the Freshmen’s and Seniors’ matches did not play in any first-class matches for the University. His only first-class match was for the Gentlemen of England in 1881. He became a barrister and later took Holy Orders.
The 1881 Census find him at 130 Training College, Westminster St John Evangelist, London, a student, aged 21, born at Charlton, Northumberland. The establishment appears to be run by Charles Mansford, unmarried, aged 47, born Eagle, Lincoln, with two other teachers living in. There appear to be 118 boarders, all young male students between the ages of 18 and 22.
