Lancashire player number 95 - Porter, Edward Horatio
by Don Ambrose

Player:EH Porter

Lancashire 1874-82
Born 13.10.1846 Liverpool.
Died 31.10.1918 Hooton, Cheshire.

His first recorded match for Birkenhead Park was on 15th and 16th June 1864 against the newly formed Lancashire County Club at Warrington, when he went in last and scored 36.

In the same month he played against Liverpool at Birkenhead, at the age of seventeen. He played regularly in these fixtures until 1882.

He was a hard-hitting right-hand batsman and a useful right-hand round-arm medium pace bowler.

He played for Eighteen of the Birkenhead Park Club against the All England Eleven on 16th to 18th August 1866, scoring 10 and 2. The following August he scored 6 not out and 32. In 1871 he scored 13 and 0 for the Eighteen against the All England Eleven.

In June 1871 he accompanied the Gentlemen of Lancashire on their tour to the Universities. He scored 3 and 5 against Cambridge and also took 3/14 and 0/17. Against Oxford on the next two days he scored 47 not out (the highest score in the match) and 11.

On 10th to 12th August 1874, just over ten years after he played against Lancashire, he played for the county for the first time, against Yorkshire at Bradford. He scored 61.

This was to remain his highest score in first-class cricket, but he turned out for the county for a few games each season until 1878 and then again in 1882.

The match he played for the Liverpool and District in 1882 was the first match played by that team, which had been formed to provide first-class cricket at the new Aigburth ground that had been opened only the previous year.

At the time of the 1881 Census he was visiting Vernon Lodge, Halewood Road, Woolton, Liverpool, the home of James Robert Hay Gordon, unmarried aged 31 born Edinburgh, a chemical manufacturer. He is then married aged 34, a produce broker. There are three domestic servants.
